Plant breeding technology is continually advancing, with biotechnology being widely adopted by countries worldwide to produce superior seeds. In Indonesia, biotechnology has been developing for quite some time, primarily in the research phase. However, the nature of genetic engineering technology has sparked controversy among the public.

To address public questions and curiosity about biotechnology seeds, on March 6, 2024, the Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (KBI) collaborated with Tabloid Sinartani to host a webinar titled “Getting to Know Biotechnology Seeds Better.” With over 2300 participants attending online, there was a high level of enthusiasm to delve deeper into the potential of biotechnology seeds in enhancing Indonesia’s food security.

Dr. Mastur, the President of KBI, participated as a speaker in this webinar. He explained various aspects related to biotechnology seeds, covering definitions, history, development processes, applications, and their benefits for food production and agriculture.

Dr. Mastur also highlighted the significant contribution of seeds to improving agricultural production amid challenges such as declining food production. Faced with this situation, he emphasized the importance of promoting advanced technology through biotechnology to enhance productivity and the well-being of farmers. According to him, the strategic role of modern biotechnology has proven to generate breakthroughs in increasing agricultural production.

During the event, Dr. Mastur addressed longstanding questions and doubts among the wider audience regarding the safety of biotechnology-produced food crops. He explained that, based on the 2005 Presidential Regulation 21 (PP 21), all Genetically Engineered Products (GEP) must undergo a rigorous process, including a study of biological safety concerning food, feed, and the environment. As he clarified, the existence of a specialized team, GEP supervision instruments, and a re-evaluation every three years ensures safety and prevents negative environmental impacts.

“There is a dedicated team responsible for releasing Genetically Engineered Products (GEP), along with monitoring instruments. Additionally, there is a reassessment every three years to ensure there are no indications of environmental harm. This ensures its safety can be guaranteed due to the stringent monitoring instruments.”
