On Friday, November 24, 2023, the Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (KBI) held a seminar titled “Beginning a Sustainable Future with Spirulina” in the Conference Room Hall D1 of the JIEXPO Kemayoran in Jakarta. The seminar was part of the Business Forum series at the China Home Life 2023 Expo, which was supported by KBI in collaboration with PT Meiorent.

The seminar aimed to introduce the potential and benefits of spirulina, a microalgae that is rich in nutrients and can be used for a variety of applications, such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and bioenergy. About 20 participants from various backgrounds attended the seminar, including the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia, Department of Chemical Engineering, the Faculty of Biology, Jenderal Soedirman University, the Faculty of Biotechnology, Pelita Harapan University, and representatives of the Chinese scientific instrument industry.

The event was opened by Sara Wijayanti, KBI’s Public Relations Officer, who acted as host, and followed by a welcome speech from Mastur, Ph.D., President of KBI, which was followed by a video about KBI, KBI membership, and the KBI anthem.

The next part of the event was the introduction of PT Albitec, which was done through a company profile video. PT Albitec is a company that produces and distributes spirulina, both in powder, capsule, and extract form. PT Albitec has a modern and hygienic spirulina cultivation facility that meets international quality standards.

The main event was a presentation by Falasifah, CEO of PT Albitec. She explained about spirulina, a microalgae that is the focus of biotechnology research and development in Indonesia and around the world. She also presented on the cultivation process, processing, and utilization of spirulina as a high-value product that can provide solutions to various national and global issues.

The event continued with a discussion and question-and-answer session led by the host. This session generated a lively discussion on topics related to the utilization of spirulina in relation to various national and global issues, ranging from stunting, superfoods, global standards, carbon storage, business prospects, to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The event concluded with a closing speech by Mastur, Ph.D., and a photo session with the speaker and seminar participants.
