Malang, East Java, Indonesia – September 11-14, 2024 – The vibrant city of Malang played host to the 9th Indonesian Biotechnology Conference (IBC-9) at the Hotel Santika Premiere. This prestigious event was held in conjunction with the 11th International Symposium on Innovation in Bioproduction on Biotechnology and Bioengineering (ISIBio-11) and the 5th International Conference on Natural Resources and Life Sciences (NRLS-5). The grand conference was organized by the Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (KBI), with robust support from BRIN, Universitas Negeri Malang, and Universitas Surabaya.
This year’s conference theme, “Accelerating Green Industrial Innovation through Biotechnology Towards Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045,” underscored the pivotal role of biotechnology in achieving industrial and environmental sustainability.

Day 1 kicked off with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Evi Susanti, the Committee Chairperson, who emphasized the importance of collaboration in biotechnology innovation. She highlighted the need for synergy between academia, industry, and government to realize the full potential of biotechnological advancements.

Following the opening remarks, Mastur, M.Si., Ph.D, President of KBI, took the stage to welcome participants from around the globe. His speech was followed by a warm address from Dr. Hariyono, M.Pd, Rector of Universitas Negeri Malang, and Benny Lianto, Rector of Universitas Surabaya, both of whom expressed their institutions’ commitment to fostering biotechnological research and innovation.

The keynote sessions commenced with a powerful presentation by Dato` Dr. Amirul Al-Ashraf Abdullah from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He captivated the audience with his discussion on the transformative role of biotechnology in green industrial innovation. Dr. Amirul highlighted how biotechnological advancements are pivotal in addressing global challenges such as climate change and sustainable resource management.

Next, Chen Wei Ning, William from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, took the stage to delve into the realm of renewable energy. His session focused on cutting-edge biotechnological solutions for sustainable energy production, emphasizing the importance of innovation in creating a greener future.

The plenary sessions continued with Dr. Chiaki Ogino from Kobe University, Japan, who shared her groundbreaking research on genetic engineering for enhanced bioproduct production. Dr. Ogino’s presentation shed light on the potential of genetic modification in improving the efficiency and yield of bioproducts, which could revolutionize industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to agriculture.

Another highlight of the day was the presentation by Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih from Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia. She discussed the development of the enzyme teaching industry, focusing on Excelzyme, a lignocellulolytic enzyme developed by the Proteomic Research Group at Universitas Airlangga. This enzyme has shown promising applications in converting agro-industrial byproducts into valuable materials for poultry and ruminant feed, as well as organic fertilizer, aligning with the circular economy principles of the ASEAN Bio-Circular-Green Economy network.

The day concluded with lively discussions and networking opportunities, setting a positive tone for the days to come.

Day 2 was a whirlwind of activity with numerous parallel sessions covering a wide array of fascinating topics such as agricultural and food biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, and biotechnology policy and law. Plenary sessions featured distinguished speakers like Zhiguang Yuchi from Tianjin University, China, who discussed environmental biotechnology, Mariana Wahjudi, Ph.D from Universitas Surabaya, Indonesia, who explored innovations in food industry biotechnology, and Oscar Witere Mitalo from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, who presented the latest research in health biotechnology.

After the break, the oral sessions were divided into 10 parallel rooms, each focusing on different aspects of biotechnology, enabling participants to engage deeply with topics most relevant to their interests. These sessions showcased research presentations from academics and practitioners across various biotechnology fields.

The conference concluded with a festive closing ceremony, where the organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all contributors, including sponsors and participants, for their role in making the event a resounding success. The Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium extended an invitation to all to join future KBI events and continue supporting the advancement of biotechnology in Indonesia.
